Q&A: Parenting choices for ba
Parenting choices for ba
Article by RedGirl
There are so many parenting options to choose from when you are having a baby and when your baby is eventually born after months of planning and preparation it can be quite nerve-wracking. Once your pregnancy or that of your partner is established you may start to think about what you need, which pushchair and crib to buy, which car seat, many of these decisions are directed by your financial and practical considerations and the types of things you like and your lifestyle. You can find lots of ideas on the internet and in publications for new parents. You might also find it useful to view comparison sites or look at magazines such as Which where you can find independent consumer reviews. When my partner and I were waiting for our first baby we wanted to have everything, to make the perfect nursery and perfect setting for our child. When our daughter was born we discovered that there were things we had bought that were hardly used even those that were recommended to us by other parents. The truth is that with your first child you are like a probationer learning what works and what doesn’t. A rough list of essentials might look like this:Car safety seat, you should have one of these even if you don’t have a carPram or buggy, I consider this essential but you could always use a sling to transport your baby while it is smallCot, always make sure the mattress is brand newSheets blankets and your choice of bedding, I liked baby sleeping bagsCotton clothingThis is the minimum you will need, be aware that you are likely to get lots of presents especially with your first child so it may be worth organising with close family and friends for them to get things that you need otherwise you get lots of clothes and soft toys, not that this is a bad thing but it may be good to supplement your own spending if you feel you could take this approach with your family and friends. In addition to the choices about what stuff to buy there are other things to think about decisions about treatment and care during pregnancy, where do you want your baby to be born and what are your plans for the birth? Have you thought of any names? Will you breastfeed or bottle feed your baby? Will your baby have it’s own cot/crib/moses basket or will you co-sleep? I will be adding articles about these decisions in my blog. http://parentingupsanddowns.blogspot.com
Since the life changing birth of my first child I’ve been interested in modern day parenting from baby through to adult. Working in education I am keen to explore the effect that parenting has on our children and whether there are ways that our western societies could lead more fulfilling lives as we go about the business of parenting our children.
